For camera work it is important to have constant movement and different angles to give a better variety to the music video but also the pace of the camera can determine a narrative of the music video and signify different events that could occur in the video.
For example Kesha's music video 'Blow' is filmed with a hand held camera to portray her raw edgy style and also gives off a 'shaky' feel to the video. This could also be used to portray her personality being wild and edgy.
For example Kesha's music video 'Blow' is filmed with a hand held camera to portray her raw edgy style and also gives off a 'shaky' feel to the video. This could also be used to portray her personality being wild and edgy.
For our video, the lyrics and feel to the concept is quite hardcore and distinct giving it some sort of edge.
So this video in being about kesha's personality being conveyed is something we also look to do as we want to make our own statement through our music video which will help us to become known to the audience and grow popularity through this.
We are definitely looking to use panning in the music video too as it creates an artistic effect and will help the audience to see a panoramic viewpoint of the video. Also I feel this type of camera work can show an establishing shot which will benefit the audience at the same time because they can enjoy a good piece of scenery to enjoy.
DJ Fresh's 'Louder' music video is a great example of showing all different camera shots and angles such as a low and high angle. Also the camera is constantly moving and has long shots, wide shots, medium long shots and importantly close ups.
These is also a lot of use of slow motion to create effect and creativity within the music video. And the editing to the beat of the song and great lighting adds to the overall arty effect.
In terms of our music video, we hope to use different camera angles and shots to create our own feel to the video. Also I think in our song being about hating a boy after the bad relationship, it is vital to have a lot of direct looks into the camera and eye contact so it comes across like were actually talking to the boy so he will know the song is about him. This would also make 'the boy' a key audience for us.
Costume
For our music video we have decided to use the theme of black and white for our costume as these contrasting colours stand out and are distinct from other colour pairings. Also many videos use the idea of black and white for costumes and background effects as it is well known to produce good videos and stand out from others. A good example of this is Aluna George who uses the black and white theme through out her video and costume changes, this could be because she felt in was necessary to use to go with her lyrics to do with love or it could just be because she just likes black and white, either way I felt it worked well.
As we have decided to wear black and white outfits for our music video, seeing other artist do it makes us more confident to also use the same idea as it is commonly done but also can sometimes go well with personal, strong lyrics. Also we feel the colours black and white are bold and previously for our AS practise video we had all black clothes but a black and white effect which worked well so we know it will work perfectly again.
Although we are not going to make the background black and white, we know what to expect if we did want to. That would be a decision after having filmed the video.
It is quite common for most music artist/groups to have at least one black and white themed music video. Here are some examples....
One direction: Little things.
Justin Timberlake: Suit and tie.
Jay Z ft Mr.Hudson: Forever Young
Editing
Sometimes different types of editing is used to portray the song title, for example the 'All of the lights' video by kanye west, Kid cudi and Rihanna use special effects such as strobe lights and different colours repeatedly to connect with the song title.
It is not certain what type of editing we will interpret into our music video yet but if we were too, it would be in consideration to the lyrics and different camera shots. For example we might use slow motion when there's a close up of the artist to signify them and make them know to the audience. Like as you can see the special lighting effects are when there is a close up of the artist, we would hope to do something similar to that.
Also throughout Kanye west's song 'Heartless', he uses animation as an editing effect which was to pay tribute to Ralph Bakshi's 1981 film 'American Pop'. The video was directed by Hype William's and was his first animated video to direct.
