Carols ideas of continuity is usually broken by the use of editing...
For example...
Special effects, a good example of this is Michael Jackson's video of "Leave me alone". Throughout the whole video are uses of special effects, this brings a more comedic feel to the video and lyrics.
Jump cuts, a good example of this is Jennifer Lopez ft Pitbull, "on the floor". There are a lot of uses of jump cuts as it is a fast pace song and the concept being a party emphasises this. The camera work is also fast paced in this video which flows well with the jump cuts as it is a fast song.
Also the use of base tracks are used in music videos to give a form of structure which makes the video more efficient and presentable to at the audience. An example of this is "Deja Vu" by Beyonce.
Here, I identified 11 different base tracks...
- Jay z sitting on a chair rapping
- Beyonce dancing with a green papered background
- Beyonce sitting on a chair dancing and singing
-Beyonce dancing on a sofa bed and lying on it
- Beyonce on another chair, dancing around and singing
- Beyonce running around in the fields ( daytime )
- Beyonce in water dancing and singing with a forest in the background
- A dark house setting with jay z rapping and Beyonce dancing around him
- Beyonce in the sand dancing around
- Beyonce in the dark house setting by herself singing
- And lastly, Beyonce in the fields at night-time with the forest background again.
The use of base tracks also makes the music video look simple but this is not the case. So it shows how base tracks are useful in music videos to give it a sense of structure and also continuity of repeated locations being used differently.
